The event took place on Friday, November 17, in the city of Levi, Lapland. The theme of 2023 is education, civilization, wisdom.
In addition to Olga Dibrova, former President of the country Tarja Halonen, Member of the European Parliament
Sirpa Pietikäinen, and Danish Ambassador to Finland Jakob Nymann-Lindegren, took part in the panel discussion 'Towards a United Europe on the Wings of Civilization.
Ambassador Olga Dibrova on faith in the power of dialogue and defense capability, on changing life before and after a full-scale invasion:
-
I believe in the power of dialogue, but at the same time I believe in the power of defense, so here are some simple examples. In the period from 2014 to 2022, Ukraine held more than 200 rounds of negotiations with russia, 20 ceasefires were agreed upon, and russia violated all of them. These negotiations did not stop putin from attacking Ukraine in 2022.
-
Today, the history of Europe is shaped by the Ukrainian infantry. It is when they enter and liberate a village that everything falls into place: the aggressor is repelled, punished, and expelled. At that moment, justice is restored, and respect for international law is reinstated.
-
We should strive for dialogue and communication, but we should all be acutely aware that not everyone shares our beliefs. That is why it is so important that we, Ukrainians, are part of Europe and share common values. Unfortunately, in the 21st century there are those who kill people for their beliefs, their choices, for being different. This shouldn't happen, it's madness, but unfortunately, this is what Ukrainians are facing now.
-
We must be clearly aware that we live in decisive, turning times. If the aggressor does not retaliate now, if we give Russia the opportunity to achieve and consolidate at least a small success, if we leave at least one square meter of Ukrainian land, this will be a telling signal for the autocrats of the whole world. It's scary to imagine what the world will be like then.
-
On February 24, 2022, our life changed to before and after. If russia does not retaliate, the existence of democracy, freedom, and international law will be greatly questioned. We must do everything we can to protect our lives and principles.
