On June 16, 2022, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Finland and Iceland Olga Dibrova together with the Mayor of Reykjavik Dagur Eggertsson visited Kyiv Square
Give the square the name Kænugarður (the name of Kiev, known to Icelanders since ancient sagas) / Kýiv-torg The Reykjavik City Planning and Transport Council decided unanimously at its meeting on April 27, 2022. The name of the square in English is Kyiv Square, and a similar translation will be used in other languages. In this way, the city of Reykjavik expresses its support and emphasizes the age-old connection between Iceland and Kyiv.
Kyivska Square is located at the intersection of Garðastræti and Túngata Streets, where the Russian Embassy is located nearby.
We are sincerely grateful to Reykjavik and the people of the city for their solidarity with the Ukrainian people and Ukrainian cities.
Ukrainian flags have been flying in front of the Reykjavik City Hall since the first days of the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
