February 24, 2023, will mark one year since russia`s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. We invite everyone who cares to demonstrate solidarity with the Ukrainian people and honor the memory of those who fallen in the russian war against Ukraine by lighting candles on the steps of the Helsinki Cathedral.
The action will start at 4:00 p.m. with the ringing of the bell of the Helsinki Cathedral, after which a minute of silence will be observed.
Candles will be placed on the steps of the Helsinki Cathedral by Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, Ambassador of Ukraine to Finland Olga Dibrova, Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, Education Minister Li Andersson, Nordic Cooperation and Equality Minister Thomas Blomqvist, Employment Minister Tuula Haatainen, Transport and Communications Minister Timo Harakka, Family Affairs and Social Services Minister Krista Kiuru, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Antti Kurvinen, Helsinki Mayor Juhana Vartiainen, Helsinki Parish Union director Juha Rintamäki, and Rector of the University of Helsinki Sari Lindblom.
Those wishing to express their support for Ukraine and light a candle will be able to visit the "Light for Ukraine" event from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
