The next presidential elections of the Russian Federation are scheduled for March 18, 2018. Despite principal objections of Ukraine, the Russian Federation is intending to have elections on the illegally occupied territory of Crimea.
Carrying out elections on the illegally occupied territory of Crimea is illegitimate and Ukraine considers any election results null and void.
Holding of the elections constitutes gross violation of the Constitution and legislation of Ukraine, basic principles and norms of international law, the United Nations Charter, the Helsinki Final Act, the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, the UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/68/262 “Territorial Integrity of Ukraine” of 27 March 2014 and other international legal acts.
The UN General Assembly in its Resolution on tterritorial integrity of Ukraine of 27 March 2014 (http://www.refworld.org/docid/534502a14.html) confirmed its adherence to sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine in its internationally recognized borders, and also called upon all states and international organizations not to recognize any change of the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, refraining from any actions which might be explained as recognition of any changed status.
Thus, according to the general principle of the law – "Jus ex injuria non oritur" – law could not emerge from its violation – Russian presidential elections in Crimea, their results and legal consequences are illegitimate.
Ukraine is grateful to Finland for the unwavering support of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Finland is among the biggest contributors to the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Donbas and co-sponsored two very important UN General Assembly Resolutions on the Situation of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine, both in 2016 & 2017 (http://bit.ly/2E7MqDt, http://bit.ly/2nLTz5C).
As it is stated on the MFA of Finland’s website, “Finland's position is that, under international law, Crimea belongs to Ukraine. According to Ukrainian law, Crimea should not be entered through Russia.”
With this regard the Embassy of Ukraine to Finland urges the international community not to take part in the observation missions in the illegally occupied Crimea and not to visit the illegally occupied territory of Ukraine, entering the peninsula through Russia.
You can learn more about the rules of entry to Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula either at the MFA of Finland’s (http://bit.ly/1MvXkFT) or/and & the Embassy’s website (http://bit.ly/1IojIN6).
