Four years of Crimea occupation - Ukrainians show their views across Europe under the #liberatecrimea movement
Ninety Ukrainians and Finns opposed the Crimean occupation and protested at the Russian Embassy on Sunday.
Russia occupied the Crimean peninsula four years ago.
In Finland, the protest was held on Sunday in front of the Russian Embassy in Helsinki.
On Sunday and Monday, across Europe, actions against Crimea’s occupation, in favour of the Crimean Tatars and Ukraine, and for unity have been taking place under #liberatecrimea. Apart from Helsinki, people in Latvia, Lithuania, and Spain and throughout Ukraine will also join the movement.
- We are, above all, for the termination of the occupation of the Crimea, but also for the respect of human rights in the temporary occupied region, Oliver Loode says. He continues that the goal is to involve the civil society.
Ilja Pivovar , the President of the Association of Ukrainians in Finland, says that Ukrainians have not lost their hope of getting Crimea back to Ukraine.
- There is hope, but Russia is hard pressed, he says.
- At least we try. Major political changes require influence and civil society help, Loode continues.
As one way of influencing, Pivovar mentions sanctioning and resumption of sanctions.
Russia occupied the Crimean peninsula four years ago. On February 26, 2014, in Crimea, the armed men in Simferopol attacked the Crimean Parliament. Unidentified soldiers turned out to be Russians.
Ukraine demands Russia to withdraw from Crimea. The international community doesn’t accept the occupation of Crimea. After the events in the Crimea, in the spring of 2014, a war in the East of Ukraine have started. And the war continues.
